Literature + Clickbait

March 21, 2017 by Megan Leave a Comment

I don’t know about everybody else, but March Madness has really been limiting my read-time these last few days. And when I wasn’t watching the games at work (I kid! ...a little bit), my lovely coworker Sam shared this article with me, which is relevant not only to my blog but to our jobs as well.

Traditionally, clickbait is just that - a catchy and/or sensationalist headline meant to bait readers into clicking on them, usually to generate revenue. Something everyone should be wary of these days, but in some cases, such as with this campaign, it’s something I think we can all get behind. Dallas bookstore The Wild Detectives launched Litbait last year on National Read a Book Day (which I’ll have to remember when it rolls around this year!), using witty headlines to direct people to blog posts that included the texts of entire books.

A very clever campaign that I love! Definitely worthy of all the clicks. Check out the full story with examples here.

I definitely would've clicked on “British guy dies after selfie gone wrong.” Which link are you not too ashamed to admit you would've tried?

List: Ice Cream + Books

February 12, 2017 by Megan Leave a Comment

Lots of things go well with books - everything from coffee and tea to blankets and arm chairs to beaches and lazy afternoons in the park. Ice cream and books is probably not a common pairing, but it's a genius one. This list from Book Riot suggests a book for every flavor of Ben & Jerry's and I, for one, can't wait to dig in!

Food in Fiction + Recipe Inspiration

January 23, 2017 by Megan Leave a Comment

I don't usually read books with the intention of making a specific food for the blog (with the exception of Pumpkin because I was really craving pumpkin pie!), but this list I found on Book Riot might have me re-thinking that approach.

I have already read a few of these, like The Joy Luck Club for the blog and, of course, the Harry Potter series. A few of them are on my to-read list already, including Margaret Atwood's The Edible Woman. So many more of them are about to be added to my to-read list! I can't wait to check out Idlewild (set in my own Detroit), Confused Spice, or The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake.

Well, now that I'm starving and excited about new books, I'm off to go find some dinner. See you all later this week with another review and recipe!

Lemony Snicket on Netflix + Unfortunate Recipes

January 13, 2017 by Megan Leave a Comment

The movie in 2004 was my first exposure to Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. I still haven't read the books, but after this latest article from NPR about all of the delicious food to be found throughout the series - "often [as] a supporting character," I may just be tempted to give them a try too! At the very least, these recipes for pasta puttanesca, chilled  cucumber soup and coconut cream cake are worth a taste.

KP Authors Cook Their Books

December 14, 2016 by Megan 1 Comment

I'm excited to announce that one of my blog recipes is featured in a new e-cookbook! Even better news - it's free! This cookbook is a compilation of recipes chosen/created by authors to go along with their latest books from Kindle Press. Jim Nelson, author of one of my favorite books this year - Bridge Daughter, kindly asked if he could use my recipe for Zucchini Pancakes for his entry. And look, it's right there:

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life + Mac and Cheese in a Jalapeno-Chipotle Cream Sauce

December 11, 2016 by Megan 4 Comments

I have been wanting to talk about Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life since I watched the long-awaited last four words two weeks ago. Even though I started it a little late because of my trip, I still finished it before most of my friends. [SPOILER ALERT: Scroll down to the recipe if you’d like to avoid potential spoilers for any/all of the four new episodes.]

I have to admit, like many, I was a little disappointed in the Netflix revival. It was certainly enjoyable to see the familiar faces around Stars Hollow and revisit the beloved characters. There were peaks where they seemed to really have their rhythm back (gotta love those fast talkers) and poignant moments that captured the essence of the show, but for me, those were few and far between.
